Ryan McIlvain will read from and sign his debut novel, Elders. At the heart of the novel are two young Mormon missionaries in Brazil, both struggling with aspects of their faith and doubting the future: Elder McLeod, an outspoken, surly, a brash American and Elder Passos, a devout, ambitious Brazilian. In Elders, McIlvain illuminates the complexities of faith and love through two utterly original, unforgettable protagonists.
A glorious debut that T.C. Boyle calls "powerful and deeply moving" that follows two young Mormon missionaries in Brazil and their tense, peculiar friendship.
Born a sixth-generation Mormon, McIlvain left the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in his mid-twenties. His fiction and nonfiction have appeared in many journals, including The Paris Review. A Stegner Fellow at Stanford from 2009 to 2011, he currently lives with his wife in Los Angeles.
